Consultation and feedback documents

This consultation is now closed.

Following the consultation NATS and Gatwick Airport Ltd (GAL) jointly published an initial consultation feedback report providing details of the issues raised – this is available from the links further down this page.  Since then we have been developing detailed designs taking into account the consultation responses.

This work has led us to split the London Airspace Consultation project into two parts; the first part focuses on changes designed to improve the efficiency of London City Airport flight paths, and the second part on changes in the vicinity of Gatwick Airport.

Changes to support improvement of London City flight paths

The link below is to a design report providing an overview of the NATS design for London City routes above 4,000ft and also changes to some Biggin Hill, Southend and Gatwick routes that interact with the London City routes over parts of North and East Kent, Essex and Suffolk.

LINK TO DESIGN REPORT

NATS will submit a formal proposal to the CAA on 16th February 2015. Subject to CAA approval we expect implementation in late 2015.

The guidance provided by the CAA states that in the event that you wish to present any new evidence or data for the CAA’s consideration prior to their decision regarding the proposal, it must be submitted directly to them, in writing, to the following address’:

Gatwick airspace change proposal postponement

GAL undertook further consultation in summer 2014 on specific low altitude options for their route changes. This focused on the low altitude routes below 4,000ft where accountability for route design rests with the airport. For this reason, it was not a joint exercise with NATS.

Following this consultation GAL decided to postpone low altitude changes in order to undertake more work to better understand their options and next steps.

NATS has therefore decided to postpone the higher level ‘point merge’ design proposed for Gatwick arrivals, and associated elements of the route network, while the airport undertakes its further work.

NATS’ proposed network design is partly dependent on the low level solutions that GAL develops and we are therefore not in a position to finalise and publish our proposed network design until GAL is ready to progress their low altitude designs.. Note that GAL has not declared any timescales for completing this work.

Modernisation of the airspace for Gatwick nonetheless remains a requirement of the CAA’s Future Airspace Strategy (FAS).

The feedback from the joint consultation (October 13-January 14) remains valid and will be considered in finalising the network design for Gatwick. Once this design work has been completed, NATS and GAL will produce a further feedback report. Stakeholders who responded to the joint consultation (October 13-January 14) will be notified when this is published.
